A machine tool that uses a computer to automatically process parts into a circular or cylindrical shape. In the 1950s, NC lathes were developed to perform computer-controlled turning operations. The latest NC lathes use sub-micron level processing technology and are strong in the production of materials for precision instruments that require processing at a level of 0.1 µm or less than 1 micron.
