Kisage processing is a metalworking method that uses a chisel-shaped scraper tool called a "kisage" to flatten and finish the surface of castings and other materials. By rubbing the metal against each other and scraping down the indentations (unevenness) to just a few microns, an ultra-flat finish that cannot be achieved with machine tools can be achieved. Kisage processing has long been performed by hand by craftsmen. Kisage" machining by skilled workers has a higher degree of flatness than machining by machine tools, and is also used for machining beds (foundations) that serve as reference surfaces for NC machine tools, and guideways and sliding surfaces for tables and other equipment.
